Approximately one in six Americans faces hunger, and sadly, households with children have a higher rate of hunger than households without them. Perhaps the most pressing issue in our nation and around the world, hunger ruins thousands of lives every day.
And that’s why Starbucks decided to start a program to help eradicate hunger in our country. If you’ve ever worked in food service, you know how much perfectly good food goes to waste because of sanitation laws. Fortunately, organizations like Food Donation Connection and Feeding America go above and beyond to salvage as much of this food as possible. Together with Starbucks stores around the nation, they hope to feed thousands of people in need.
Starbucks is teaming up with these organizations to donate millions of prepared meals to hungry people across the United States.
Since 2010, Starbucks has been donating leftover pastries to food drives, but now they’ve found a way to donate all perishable food items.
It is estimated that with this initiative, Starbucks will donate around 5 million meals within the first year.

Ending hunger for good may seem like an unattainable goal right now, but with programs like this, we are definitely moving in the right direction. Let’s hope that more major players in the food service industry follow suit!
